Kestrel’s Andy Potts won Ironman 70.3 St. Croix Sunday, trumping the one and only Lance Armstrong to earn his second consecutive victory of the 2012 season.

As expected, Potts was first out of the water and led a good portion of the bike, pushing hard on his Kestrel 4000. But around Mile 40, just as the course started to turn upward, Armstrong showed off the legs that won him seven Tour de France titles and climbed into a 2-minute lead heading into T2.

But Potts chased down Armstrong, who made his professional Ironman debut in February with a 2nd-place finish in Panama, and overtook him at Mile 8 of the 13.1-mile run.

With a time of 4:03:31, Potts broke the tape nearly two minutes ahead of runner-up Stephane Poulat and four minutes ahead of Armstrong.

Scores of spectators flocked to the course to watch the legendary Armstrong in action, but it was Potts – and his Kestrel 4000 – who grabbed their attention.

Heading north to Rev3 Knoxville, Kestrel claimed yet another podium, with Cam Dye snagging 2nd. Dye was first out of the water and crushed the competition on the 24.8-mile bike, but winner Greg Bennett just slipped by on the run.

Great weekend for the Kestrel 4000.

Fuji’s Sara Haskins Wins at St. Anthony’s

On Sunday, April 29th, Sarah Haskins proved she is simply the best short distance triathlete in the United States.

With a time of 1:56:55, Sarah Haskins claimed her 4th St. Anthony’s Triathlon title, her second consecutive victory of the season, shattered the course record by 50 seconds, and bested her nearest competitor by more than two minutes.

“Sarah Haskins is a rock star!” said Fuji VP of Marketing Karen Bliss. “Breaking the tape in nearly every event she’s raced in the past year, she’s blowing away the competition. We’ve got a phenomenal brand ambassador in Sarah, and we couldn’t be more proud to have her aboard the D-6.”

Fuji teammate & 15-time NCAA All-American swimmer Sara McLarty was predictably first out of the water in 19:10, but Haskins was close at her heels.

The Sarah’s built up a solid lead on their D-6′s, with Haskins eventually pulling away. Yet Alicia Kaye, 2011′s Race to Toyota Cup Series Runner-Up, managed to close in on Haskins about half-way through the 40k bike.

But Sarah took off on the run, and Kaye was no match for the defending champion.

So I’m sitting here in shorts and a t-shirt wishing for that nice spring/summer weather we were enjoying ony a week or so back and I thought maybe I should share a little Gulf Coast good times with everyone. David Bradley and Tracey Cartee managed to meet up during spring break and got in a few sunny miles down in FLA (though it might have been AL). Sure looks like a better place than Franklin today:-( Well, tomorrow will be sunny and we’ll make the best of today.

What a Wonderful Day for a Bike Ride!

Wow! Another wonderful Sunday afternoon ride in February. Ain’t life grand!!! Yes, we got out for another fantastic day of riding and enjoyed a chamber of commerce day of sunshine and blue skies.

Several of the ladies showed up making this one of our best looking ride groups yet. Pictured in the center above and as a group below are Cathy Kaiser, Ingrid Sinclair and Leslie Ragan. Proving to all the world that girls can have fun just like the boys.

And after taking pictures of this fine group a very nice stranger stopped and offered to take our picture and include yours truly:-)

Tennessee Has new Full-Time SRTS Organizer

I have great news! Rebecca Wynd has accepted the position as Tennessee’s new full time SRTS State Network Organizer! Tennessee is one of seven states that Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has agreed to fund a full time network organizer for three years. This is due to the wonderful momentum Tennessee has accomplished. I have no doubt that Rebecca will be a strong and successful leader for the network as we enter this new phase. As most of you know, Rebecca has worked with the network already, and has a passion for SRTS. She has extensive work experience including experience in working for the Olympics and starting a non profit organization. Her official start date is March 5^th, and she will be in training for two weeks. So we will be resuming the network in mid March!

Well, it started out innocently enough. We rolled out nice and easy with a plan to let it fly once we got to Carters Creek. We had a large group of 15 and the prospect of getting shelled off the back once we made that right turn onto Carters was very real indeed. I slid my way up to the front and hit the gas. I did my pull, eased out to the side and had happy thoughts of not having to hit the front again for at least 20 minutes. WRONG! The group had already blown up and was getting thinner by the minute. I dropped back to check on grupetto and when I looked up again, it was a long thin line with a red blinkie every now and then. We caught back on and regrouped at Bear Creek and Bailey. (See last week’s photo).

The longer/faster guys had gone down to Perkins again and we waited until we could see them to pedal away, “See ya at Puckett’s”. We did a not-so-quick regroup there and the group was again split in two: 007, Jay, Jeff and Cliff headed south towards Hester Beasley as the rest of us took the long way home up over MacMillan to Boxley Valley and Boayd Mill. I led the charge for the Westhaven hill with David close behind, but Trey was ready for us and as we passed him he jumped and beat us to the top. It was a solid effort, coming from 100+ feet back, but not enough. Maybe next week. We hit the 24 mile mark just as we rolled into Mickey Roo’s.

Next in was Cliff, who flatted somewhere out there and decided to take a more “direct” route to Mickey Roo’s. We got him a glass.

In the end, the faster/longer guys did about 46 miles and some outrageous amount of climbing. The sun never really showed and it never really warmed up any, but it was Super Bowl Sunday and any time you can ride outdoors in February is a good time. Peace-
